When you rent a storage unit, you have the added convenience of a temperature-controlled facility. Books, seasonal gear, and valuables like artifacts from collections may all benefit from this method of preservation. There are many things that are easily damaged by changes in humidity and temperature. However, there are certain items you should not store in a temperature-controlled storage unit.
The following items are not recommended for storage in a temperature-controlled unit:
1. Food
Even in a climate-controlled environments, food deteriorates rapidly. It is advised not to reuse any boxes or packaging that has been exposed to food or beverages. Whether it's a basket that formerly contained bananas or liquor bottles, the odour will persist and become highly noticeable in a tiny storage area.
2. Plants
Plants are living entities that need sunshine, oxygen, and water for survival. In a climate-controlled setting, plants cannot survive, particularly if there are no windows. Plants also leave behind a substantial amount of soil and debris.
3. Waste
A storage container is not a safe location to keep hazardous materials left over after a home improvement project or from a science lab. A storage unit, whether temperature controlled or not, should not house anything that cannot be handled with bare hands. This creates a biohazard for you and everyone else in the storage facility.
4. Explosives
The storage facility will not allow any explosives, weapons, or ammunition to be stored on the premises. Explosives pose a serious threat to the safety of the storage facility's employees, as well as to the integrity of the building itself. Losses to a business's physical structure and the cost of repairing those damages might make you legally and financially responsible in the event of an explosion.
5. Cash
A friendly reminder that cash is not covered by most storage insurance policies. A safe deposit box (or, even better, a bank account) is the best place to keep your cash reserves. Although your money won't become mildewy in a climate-controlled facility, you are still putting your reserves at risk.
